This course is offered to students to expose them to a wide range of interesting academic topics and provide them with practice in listening to related material and then analyzing what they hear through structured bi-weekly discussions. The assigned text focuses on multi-disciplinary lectures and activities focused on note-taking. Units have been grouped according to academic discipline (eg. psychology, business, science, etc) and students will work individually on text practice and then in groups to focus on one text unit within that discipline, conducting regularly scheduled discussions in class. In addition to the text material, the teacher and students will select relevant supplementary audio-visual materials (such as TED Talks, Youtube videos, or audio podcasts) which will be the focus of midterm and final oral presentations. The goal of the course is to enable students to actively listen to and competently talk about various subjects of interest in academic settings, as well as to gain vocabulary and note-taking skills. Although there is a strong academic focus, the main aim of the course is to stimulate interest engaging topics while promoting a lively and fun atmosphere for English language practice.
This course is for students interested in improving their proficiencies in critical English reading abilities and in constructing persuasive arguments. With a focus on developing/strengthening critical thinking, students will study and exercise rhetorical strategies for clear comprehension and logical analysis. In additional to the reading and writing exercises that demonstrate argument analysis, students will analyze texts in the form of news articles and book excerpts. As students employ strategies such as locating key terms, identifying main claims and supporting claims, and accounting for assumptions, they will acquire the skills for understanding arguments, shaping the “topical landscape”, and building strong arguments of their own. While examining the writing techniques used to produce the texts they are studying, students will also be simultaneously producing their own texts in order to start incorporating these techniques into their own writing habits.
The aim of this course is to enhance students critical English reading abilities and develop more formal discussion skills based on critical reading of and reference to source materials. In this class, students will read a variety of texts styles with enhanced fluency following coherent and effective use of reading strategies. Students will also actively engage in extensive reading with a critical perspective (e.g., distinguishing between fact and opinion, evaluating sources, and identifying points of view). Discussion skills will be practiced in a variety of formats including whole-class analysis of topical issues, problem-solving group work, or short individual oral presentations. A focus on pronunciation of key words and application vocabulary or sentence structures presented in reading is recommended.
The course aims to help you develop advanced writing skills. In this course, you are going to explore different types of writing styles and topics in traditional essay writing and Internet-based writing assignments. It is expected that by the end of the course, you will be able to
1.be familiar with essential English composition structures and writing skills,
2.be aware of writing variation of writing for different purposes.
3.critically comment on peer writing work, and
4.writing in various genres
With an emphasis on speech presentation skills, this course provides a focus on the many ways writing is involved in the process of preparing, presenting, and evaluating speeches. From outlining and scripting an organized speech to learning specific language used in various parts of speeches, students will get practice with many speech writing skills. These include ways presenters can make their speeches clear (e.g. structuring the opening and closing, simplifying messages, and choosing formal or informal expressions) and make their speeches interesting (e.g. using good delivery techniques such as pauses, stress and repetition). Creating effective PowerPoint slides and outlining speech content in handouts will be practiced. Students will also engage in being good audience members, with writing activities focused on note-taking, Q&A and evaluation. In addition to presenting and watching speeches in class, online speech videos from Toastmasters (international speech club posts on YouTube) and TED Talks will be presented and reviewed.
This course is designed to develop the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in a technical context. Each class will revolve around practical tasks and activities encouraging students to provide creative solutions to real world technical problems. These will enable students to consolidate and apply the knowledge they build up over the duration of the course.During the course students will be required to discuss and also give informal presentations on a wide variety of technical topics. Part of the course will also be dedicated to technical writing, giving students the skills to successfully write emails, memos, technical reports, instructions and procedures.
The course is designed to improve students English writing ability to an academic level. Students will improve grammar for academic writing, write different types of essays, and write a research paper.
The course aims to improve students overall communicative competence on English oral ability. Students will learn and practice prepared speeches and presentations, impromptu speaking, and leading discussions. Students will receive constructive feedback, presentation tips and comments from the teacher. Students should come to class prepared to interact with their peers.
As a leadership development course, the content and activities provided will emphasize the importance of strong oral communication skills in English, as well as general skills such as critical thinking and organization of ideas. Topics related to speech presentation will include audience awareness, speech organization and outlining, research and visual aid preparation, and evaluation of sample speeches. The course will offer various types of hands-on practice, as students will experiment with various techniques in small groups, present individual persuasive speeches to the class, and participate in group debates. A supportive and lively atmosphere will be encouraged and a selection of supplementary materials, including video and online resources, will serve to inspire and involve students.
